icon NEWS Australia is about to become the world leaders in a new form of renewable energy… gravity energy! Gravity energy storage systems (GESS) use excess energy from the grid to lift large steel coils before dropping them and using gravity to re-release the energy, converting decommissioned mineshafts into big batteries. @GreenGravityAU has announced the construction of the Gravity Lab, a world-leading, purpose built gravitational research facility, designed to obtain high resolution performance data from the prototype GESS. The Gravity Lab will be located in Port Kembla, NSW and hopes to position Australia as the world leaders in this field. ☀️ Tag a friend so they know what the next step in Australia’s renewable strategy is Nick McDonald1 year ago1 year ago
icon NEWS Could nuclear power be part of Australia’s net-zero goals? Two key figures have two very different opinions on the matter ☢️ Earlier this month, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton made the call for nuclear plants to be built over decomissioned coal-fired power stations. He argued that it was the “only feasible and proven technology” when replacing coal, because it could plug straight into the existing grid. He also stated that it would be used in conjunction with renewables, and not instead of However, Net Zero Australia, a joint program between management consultancy Nous Group and some of Australia’s top universities, thinks otherwise. For 2 years, they’ve been collecting data on how best to make net-zero happen in Australia. Part of this included weighing up the usefulness and feasability of nuclear energy After crunching the numbers, they’ve concluded that any large-scale nuclear power projects would be too expensive and take far too long to develop if we are to meet our emissions target goals. This is partly due to Australia having existing infrastructure within the renewable space, as these project are already underway, but also due to Australia’s total lack of experience with nuclear energy, as it has been banned since the late 1990s ☀️ We highly recommend giving Net Zero Australia’s report a read, as they cover other things like the ways to mitigate the impact of decarbonisation, how to phase out fossil fuel exports without damaging the economy, and new technologies like carbon capture and offshore wind ⚡️ Nick McDonald1 year ago1 year ago
icon NEWS It’s official! Turtles have rights ⚖️ The Panamanian government just granted legal rights to sea turtles, protecting their right to live and have free passage in a healthy environment. Panama has had issues with people hunting sea turtles for commercial gains, and in particular their eggs, so the government has taken action to protect them The laws are unique in that they specifically state that sea turtles, as living creatures, have rights that must be protected. This means Panamanian turtles have a right to live free of pollution or other human impacts that cause damage to their health, like poaching, tourism, development and climate change. It also empowers any Panamanian citizen to be the voice of sea turtles and legally defend them ⚖️ Tag a friend who loves the environment to let them know about this small victory for our animals Nick McDonald1 year ago1 year ago
