CITIZENS Of The REEF Are Conducting A CENSUS Of The OCEAN And They Need YOUR HELP!
There’s a new science effort that’s letting you help protect the Great Barrier Reef from home!
@citizensgbr have launched the Great Reef Census, a census where instead of charting cities and populations, they’re seeing how climate change is impacting the reef. Scientists have critical gaps in information about the reef and how it’s changed over the years. That’s why the Citizens of the Reef are bringing together a community of students, businesses, and everyday folks with nothing but a computer or device at home and a desire to help protect the reef!
Volunteers in the water will take thousands of photos, with everyone from fishing charters to tourism vessels helping out. Then volunteers at home analyse the images on the ground-breaking online platform so that scientists can have access to crucial data on coral type and coverage at each reef site, which helps contribute to updating reef priority models. You can get involved no matter where in the world you are, making the Great Reef Census one of the globe’s largest marine citizen science initiatives!
