The MURRAY-DARLING Basin Might Soon Be Managed By Indigenous Australians
The Murray Darling Basin Authority has called for Indigenous knowledge to be incorporated into the basin’s management.
The new CEO of the MDBA, Andrew McConville, doesn’t just want to incorporate the knowledge into managing the water, but Indigenous Australians too. With the CSIRO estimating there will be 30% less water in the basin by 2050, he sees the urgency in First Nation’s traditional and regenerative practices to help save the Murray-Darling.
The Murray-Darling is home to more than 120 water bird species, 50 native fish species and 16 protected wetlands. It also generates billions each year in agricultural and tourism revenue.
