BUSHFIRES And CLIMATE CHANGE Are Pushing The GANG-GANG COCKATOO Towards EXTINCTION
Federal Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley has announced that Canberra’s iconic gang-gang cockatoo is headed towards extinction.
Like many other native animals, the recent 2019-2020 bushfires have destroyed gang-gang habitats and food sources, but the decline began years before that. According to the Threatened Species Scientific Committee, gang-gang populations in NSW have declined nearly 70% in recent decades. This new listing will allow governments and policy makers to dedicate the appropriate resources towards gang-gang conservation.
