Lane Cove Council Is Planning To Cull Magpies After Numerous Swooping Attacks
Lane Cove Council has recently proposed culling magpies following a spate of swooping attacks on Lower North Shore residents.
Because magpies are a protected species, the Council has previously attempted to decrease the likelihood of attacks by implementing non-violent strategies such as warning signs and liaising with residents.
However, as the number of injuries continue to grow, they say they have no choice but to reduce the area’s magpie population – a move that is heavily condemned by animal rights activists.
Magpies are territorial and overly-protective birds by nature.
While the cull is slated to go ahead, we can do our part to help protect these birds in other ways. Download the Magpie Alert! map so you can see the danger zones in your area, and do your best to avoid them during swooping season AKA right now till summer. It might mean a longer walk to work, but hey, more time outdoors is always a good thing.
