COP27 Has Opened With This CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC, Here’s A Recap
COP27 has kicked off with a highly controversial and complicated topic. Here’s a quick rundown:
For the first time in over a decade, compensation of poorer countries for losses and damages from climate change has made it into the COP agenda. It would see wealthier nations, who produce more carbon emissions, compensate poorer nations, who are more at risk for climate disasters due to their lack of resources.
Wealthier nations have vetoed the topic in past years, but following disasters like the recent Pakistani floods, the UN cannot ignore it any longer. Scotland and Denmark are the only countries to come forward and commit funds to compensate losses and damages.
So tell us what you think in the comments below! Is it fair that the countries who produced the most carbon should have to bear the financial burden of poorer countries’ losses and damages? Or should that money go towards accelerating their decarbonisation strategies?
