RARE BIGFIN SQUIDS Were Viewed In Deep Waters Off The GREAT AUSTRALIAN BIGHT!
Check out how scientists found these unusual and rare bigfin squids! Scientists used a remotely operated vehicle called Investigator to view the deep sea, equipped with high definition cameras, lights, and lasers. They viewed five of the creatures at depths of 2000 to 3000 metres. There had previously only been 3 sightings in the southern hemisphere. Their long spaghetti-like filaments reached up to 183cm long! Native Sepioteuthis australis squids only reach 38cm. We are excited to continue learning more about the creatures dwelling in the deep seas!
